If you've brewed a cup of Pau d'Arco tea, you're following a medical tradition that predates modern chemistry by centuries. Long before labs isolated lapachol or beta-lapachone, indigenous peoples of the Amazon and high Andes called the Tabebuia impetiginosa tree the "Divine Tree." This article covers that traditional history — as history, not as a scientific claim about what the tea does.
The Kallawaya: Healers to the Inca
The Kallawaya were the elite itinerant healers of the Andes, serving as personal physicians to Inca royalty. Based in what's now Bolivia, their medicinal knowledge was extensive enough that they're recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. For over 1,500 years, they traveled across South America carrying a pharmacopeia of nearly 1,000 medicinal plants — with the inner bark of Pau d'Arco among their most prized remedies.
To the Kallawaya, Pau d'Arco was a tonic for "strength and vigor," traditionally used to address blood health, chronic infection, and inflammation as they understood it.
A Traditional "Cure-All" Across Cultures
The Guarani and Tupi tribes called the tree tajy — "to have strength and vigor." The name "Pau d'Arco" itself is Portuguese for "bow stick," referring to the wood's durability. Traditional uses recorded across tribes include:
- Respiratory issues — colds, coughs, and flu during rainy seasons.
- Fungal infections — applied topically or drunk as a strong brew.
- Immune support — viewed as a blood purifier.
- Pain management — for arthritis and general aches.
These are traditional/ethnobotanical uses, not clinical indications.
The Science Behind the Tradition
Modern lab research has identified lapachol and beta-lapachone as the naphthoquinones behind the tree's traditional reputation, with studied antifungal activity against Candida albicans — one reason it's associated with candida-related use today (see Pau d'Arco and Candida). A 2021 review in Phytochemistry also discussed beta-lapachone's role as an NAD+ catalyst relevant to cellular metabolism. These are laboratory findings that help explain traditional use — not proof the traditional use "worked" in the clinical sense.

Why Preparation Matters: The Decoction Method
Traditional healers understood something a modern tea drinker often misses: Pau d'Arco isn't a "steep and sip" tea. The active quinoids aren't very water-soluble, so a quick infusion under-extracts them. The decoction method — simmering the bark — is how traditional preparations, and our own brewing guide, unlock the compounds:
- Use 3 tablespoons of inner bark per 4.5 cups of water.
- Bring to a boil.
- Cover and simmer 8–25 minutes (longer simmers produce a more concentrated tea).
- Strain through a fine mesh filter.
- Serve hot or cold.
Precautions and Considerations
- Pregnancy: traditional caution and modern research both point toward avoiding Pau d'Arco during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Blood thinners: consult a healthcare professional if you're on anticoagulant medication.
- Dosage: large single doses can cause nausea or GI upset — start with one or two cups daily.
